type='text'>Hey Sean!

I'm liking the new look. Very clean...

Hey Sean!

I'm liking the new look. Very clean, very professional.

I'm also glad to see this new direction for your writing. One of the greatest things about being a teacher is being able to play a small part in helping develop our pupils' potential, one of the worst things is not knowing what happens to that potential... hopefully I/we can keep following your progress here! ;) (Hint, hint!)

Although it was a few years ago, I remember going through the phase you are describing. I used to get back from an early afternoon tutorial and find I had to have a quick nap... on one memorable occasion, I woke up completely disorientated because it was getting dark and I couldn't work out whether it was 7 at night or 7 in the morning...

As you've kind of hinted at, university is one of the few times in your life when you can concentrate solely on learning for learning's sake... and yet this has to be balanced with learning to be a 'real' grown-up... still, nobody ever said life would be easy — fun, yes! Easy, no!

It's good to read about the music you are playing and/or rehearsing. It helps remind me that school plays only the first steps on what is, for you, a long and ever-changing journey. We give you the basics, then send you off to play... folk!?! (Remember, I'm a folk singer too... or at least, when I get up to sing, people go "Oh folk, it's him again!".

Now go, rehearse, improve, relax, and make time for the important things. Remember, we'll be here to support and cajole when you need it. In this connected world I'm beginning to realise that school doesn't really end when you leave!

Take care, man!
<link rel='edit' Competition is minimal and therefore there is no evolution, right?

But then we'll have to figure out the "rubric" for creativity and innovation to judge and assess the creativity and innovation, and how can we clearly tell one way is more creative than other when both are creative? I guess we need to make that solid.

Or if we get most of major colleges to change their admission policy so students will get more creative (heard colleges tend to value standarized test scores less than before) then schools on the lower hierarchy will naturally change because school's business depends on how many students they send to ivyleague. in america.

-soojin

I totally agree with you. I think people need to know the theory, they need to know why certain things are the way they are, and once they know they need to think outside the box and be creative.
The great masters of jazz use to tell their pupils to copy the cats, and once they achieve a high level they should take what they learnt and make it theirs. Meaning, learn the rules, then break them and create your own rules.
That is how change happens.

I think the fact is that in the smallest parts of ...

I think the fact is that in the smallest parts of our society, even the offices where people, as you say, run our public services, the necessity to think in unconventional ways is being recognized as more and more necessary today. Afterall, continuing to do something in the exact same way that it has always been done without realizing why is usually a recipe for disaster. When change occurs, even on the most incremental level, these people will be unable to handle it and completely inequipped to help society evolve to meet new challenges. Perhaps one of the major reasons educational institutions continue to produce people who seem unable to fit the changing social and economic landscape is that many educational systems seem to be having the greatest trouble of all evolving their own programs to meet these challenges.

I have to admit that I am enamored by the way you ...

I have to admit that I am enamored by the way you have chosen to express yourself in this blog entry.
